The full Camino story


This blog is fine when you're following day by day. It's not so easy to navigate retrospectively.

To make it easier to read from day to day, or to find a particular stage, we've combined the entire Camino journey into one document.

This only includes the stages we walked from St Jean Pied de Port to Santiago de Compostela, not the preliminary blogs from New Zealand, then on through Canada and to France. Nor does it include the journey home, through Holland and Singapore.

Day 25 - Foncebadon to Ponferrada

Cathie waited more than five hours for this wonderful swim at Molinaseca. A very hard day of three distinct stages and one delightful interlude. Goodbye to the village of Foncebadon. We started the day in the hillside town of Foncebadon. We were in a lovely hotel, but the flies and the stodgy food had done us in. We were rattling the door to the breakfast room at the promised time of 7pm and were soon on our way, climbing slightly to the famous Cruz de Ferro, less than 2km and not much more than 20 minutes away on an easy track. Waving goodbye to all our cares and woes at Cruz de Ferro. There are a couple of significant aspects to this point. The geographical aspect is that at 1505m it's the highest point on the Camino - 50m higher than the crossing of the Pyrenees. The other is that by tradition you take a stone from your home and add it to the significant pile already there, signifying that you've brought all your baggage from your pre-Camino life and left them there, leaving...

Day 24 - Astorga to Foncebadon

  A hazy day as we get into the hills. We've fallen on our feet here. Hostal El Trasgu at Foncebadon is absolutely wonderful. Rough surfaces - a precursor of tomorrow's descent? Today we left the high plains of the Meseta at 900m and headed into the hills of the Montes de Leon, climbing first to Rabanal at 1155m after 20km, then on to Foncebadon at 1400m, with 26km on the clock. The last stretch was a test over rough terrain and many pilgrims were travelling very slowly by the end as the mercury climbed into the mid-30s (although most stopped at the hillside village of Rabanal). At midnight, the plaza below us was drenched with heavy rain. But first: Last night in Astorga we were blessed with a fancy city hotel and air conditioning.
